NYCN Urges NASU to Reassess Role in WAEC Dispute

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on the leadership of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) to reevaluate its involvement in the ongoing industrial dispute between NASU’s WAEC branch and the management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria. In a statement signed by its national president, Isah Abubakar, on Friday in Kaduna, the NYCN expressed concerns regarding the prolonged breakdown in industrial relations within WAEC.

The Council urged NASU's national leadership to adopt a conciliatory approach to restore harmony within the organization. While acknowledging NASU's commitment to protecting its members' interests, the NYCN emphasized the need for a balance with the broader goal of promoting industrial peace and institutional stability.

The Council's intervention was prompted by a petition from a concerned Nigerian questioning NASU's neutrality in the dispute, particularly regarding demands that included a reduction in the duration of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
