Team Nigeria Prepares for 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games officially begins today in Glasgow, Scotland, with Team Nigeria participating alongside 73 other countries. The Games will run from July 23 to August 2, featuring approximately 3,000 athletes competing for 215 gold medals across 10 sports.

This marks the fourth time Scotland has hosted the Commonwealth Games. Team Nigeria aims to leverage its strengths in traditional sports such as boxing, judo, and weightlifting to improve upon its past performances.

Athletes have reported unprecedented welfare packages, including daily allowances of $200 for athletes and $250 for coaches, significantly higher than the previous Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Medalists will receive cash prizes of $3,000 for gold, $2,000 for silver, and $1,000 for bronze, with additional performance bonuses from the Federal Government.

To assist with travel expenses, the NSC has approved ₦500,000 for each athlete and official.
