NYSC, Atiku, Others Disagree Over Corps Member’s Extension

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are at odds over the extension of service for corps member Lagos Ushie Rita Uguamaye. Uguamaye gained attention for criticizing President Bola Tinubu's administration in a viral TikTok video.

She claimed that her service year was extended as punishment for her comments. Atiku expressed concern over the situation, questioning why Uguamaye's discharge certificate was withheld.

In response, the NYSC clarified that Uguamaye's service was extended by two months for failing to attend a biometric clearance in April 2025, emphasizing that this was a standard disciplinary procedure. The NYSC urged the public not to politicize the issue and to understand that service extensions are a longstanding tradition within the organization.

Human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore also criticized the NYSC for denying Uguamaye her discharge certificate, promising to support her in seeking justice.
