NYSC Tackles Youth Unemployment Through Skills Training

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), highlighted the organization's pivotal role in addressing youth unemployment in Nigeria. During a briefing for participants of a senior executive course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, he stated that the NYSC has trained a total of 1,391,119 young graduates in various vocational skills from 2019 to 2025.

The NYSC's skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development program, introduced in 2012, aims to empower Nigerian youth with self-reliance and vocational skills necessary for self-employment. Nafiu pointed out the scarcity of white-collar jobs in Nigeria today and noted that the NYSC's mandate is to equip corps members with entrepreneurial skills, which will not only promote self-sufficiency but also enhance the labor market.

He expressed gratitude to government agencies and partners for their support in implementing the program, which includes technical funding, soft loans, and grants for corps entrepreneurs.
