NYSC Celebrates 53 Years of Promoting National Unity

Brig Gen Olakunle Nafiu, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), stated that the NYSC remains a crucial instrument for national unity in Nigeria, particularly as it marks its 53rd anniversary on May 22. Established in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), the NYSC aims to foster national integration and cultural exchange among youth by deploying graduates outside their home states.

Nafiu noted that the scheme has significantly contributed to rebuilding the nation and promoting inter-ethnic relationships, including marriages across ethnic lines. Despite challenges, he asserted that the NYSC has played a meaningful role in maintaining national cohesion.

The scheme has evolved since its inception in 1973, currently mobilizing around 400,000 graduates annually, adapting to changing realities and youth expectations. Nafiu reaffirmed the NYSC's commitment to preparing young Nigerians for leadership roles and fostering a shared national identity.
