Peter Obi Challenges Claims of Debt from Anambra Tenure

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), responded to allegations regarding unpaid debts from his tenure as governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2013. He challenged critics and the Anambra State Government to present evidence of claims that his administration left behind a N2 billion ecological loan, unpaid contractor liabilities, salaries, gratuities, and pensions.

Obi stated that his administration cleared over N35 billion in historical gratuities and arrears before he left office, asserting that at the time of handover, the state owed nothing in salaries, gratuities, or pensions. He explained that the alleged N2 billion ecological loan was released shortly before the end of his tenure for a specific project, which he chose not to spend, leaving the funds untouched in a First Bank account.

Obi emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, inviting scrutiny of his academic credentials and urging institutions to release relevant documents.
