Obi Meets US Envoy to Discuss 2027 Election Credibility

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate, met with Rick Swart, the US Consul General in Lagos, on Tuesday to discuss the importance of credible elections in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections. The discussions aimed to strengthen bilateral relations, improve electoral credibility, and expand economic cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

Obi emphasized the need for a free and interference-free political space, particularly for opposition parties, to thrive and contribute to Nigeria's democratic process. The meeting also covered trade and investment opportunities.

This engagement comes amid significant changes in Nigeria's opposition landscape, particularly following the departure of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), which has altered political alignments ahead of the elections. Obi's departure from the ADC reflects ongoing challenges within Nigeria's political situation, highlighting the need for unity among opposition parties to effectively contribute to national development.
