Segun Odegbami Advocates for Sports in Nigeria's Economy

Chief Segun Odegbami, former captain of the Super Eagles, called on the Federal Government to tap into the economic potential of Nigeria’s sports sector, which he described as vital for the country's emerging Orange Economy. Speaking on Thursday during a lecture titled “The Role of Sports as an Enabler of the Orange Economy” at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Jos, Plateau State, Odegbami emphasized the need for Nigeria to build the necessary structures and confidence to compete globally.

He pointed out that the country often underestimates the economic value of sports, which encompasses various sectors beyond just football, including ticketing, branding, and sports facilities. Odegbami argued that with proper development, the sports sector could create jobs and enhance economic growth.

He urged for investments in functional sports infrastructure that would benefit communities continuously, citing successful examples from Kenya, Ethiopia, and Scandinavian countries. Odegbami also shared his commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting fitness among Nigerians.
