Oghenegaren Osievwo-Thompson Wins Nigeria's First Fencing Gold

On August 9, 2026, 17-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwo-Thompson made history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in an international fencing tournament at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships held in Lagos. Competing in the U-23 men’s epee event, Osievwo-Thompson, a former England fencer, finished the tournament unbeaten, showcasing his talent and signaling a new era for the sport in Nigeria.

He dominated the competition at Rugby School Nigeria, defeating reigning Asian champion Lokesh Vemani of India with a final score of 15–5. Throughout the tournament, he remained flawless, winning all his bouts in the preliminary pool stages and earning a bye into the knockout rounds.

In the Round of 16, he defeated South Africa’s Karabo Mathobela 15–7 and then triumphed over India’s Shivaansh Kapoor 15–2 in the quarterfinals. Osievwo-Thompson expressed pride in representing Nigeria, especially in front of his grandparents, who witnessed his historic victory.
