Esiovwa-Thompson Wins Nigeria's First Gold in Fencing

Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson, a teenager who previously represented England in fencing, announced his switch to represent Nigeria, motivated by his desire to fulfill his Olympic dream. On Sunday, he made history by winning gold in the men’s U-23 epee event at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships held at Rugby School Nigeria.

Esiovwa-Thompson triumphed over three Indian opponents to secure the title, with his grandparents present to support him. He expressed that the victory was a culmination of extensive training and dedication, stating, “A lot of training, sweat and tears went into this.” He credited the home crowd for their support, which he found overwhelming and pivotal to his success.
