Customs Seizes N1.35bn 19th Century Artefacts in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of Olukayode Afeni, intercepted two rare 19th-century artefacts along with several prohibited items, generating a total duty-paid value of N1.35 billion. This operation took place in Ogun State, particularly along the Nigeria-Benin Republic border, as part of intensified anti-smuggling efforts.

Afeni briefed the media on Monday, stating that the artefacts are believed to hold significant historical and cultural importance and will undergo formal appraisal before being handed over to the National Museum in Abeokuta for preservation. The command has demonstrated its commitment to preventing the illicit trafficking of Nigeria's cultural heritage and safeguarding the nation's economy.

During the review period, the command generated N285.6 million in revenue, an increase from N259.2 million recorded in the previous period. The operation also included the seizure of various smuggled goods, emphasizing the ongoing fight against smuggling in the region.
