Ogun Ex-Commissioner Praises Life Sentence for Rapist

Motunrayo Adeley, the former Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, commended the state judiciary for its decision to impose a life sentence on Emmanuel Obirija, who was convicted of unlawfully having sexual intercourse with a minor. The judgment was delivered by Justice Catherin Ogunsanya on June 18, 2026, at the Ogun State High Court in Ijebu Ode.

Adeley stated that the verdict serves as a strong reminder that the court remains a safe haven for victims seeking justice and reassures survivors that the judiciary will continue to ensure that those who disregard the law receive appropriate punishment. She acknowledged the contributions of various stakeholders, including the Ogun State Sexual Assault Referral Centre and law enforcement agencies, in prosecuting the case, which was first reported at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu on December 2, 2022.

Adeley emphasized the importance of collaboration in tackling sexual and gender-based violence.
