NANS Elects New Leadership in Ogun Amid Controversies

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) held elections for new leadership in Ogun State on October 13, 2023, at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat in Abeokuta. The election was marked by internal crises and controversies, with Comrade Olabod Faruq from the Adegbenro Polytechnic, Itori, emerging as the new leader.

He emphasized a commitment to student rights and a unified agenda. Comrade Olushola Oladoja, the national president of NANS, and Adeyemo Kayod, the southwest zonal coordinator, praised the independent electoral committee led by Akinboduns Sileola for conducting a credible and transparent election.

However, the event was marred by violence, including an attack on Comrade Azeez Adeyemi Amoo, a special assistant to the governor on student matters, which was condemned by the Ogun JCC leadership. The leadership expressed sympathy for the victim and condemned the lawless behavior, asserting that such actions have no place in the student movement.
