Ogun State Shuts Down Battery Recycling Plants in Ogijo Over Lead Poisoning Concerns

Ogun State government has closed seven battery recycling plants in Ogijo and urged the temporary suspension of lead ingot exports to address lead poisoning concerns in the area. The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, announced the shutdown following an inspection tour prompted by viral videos showing hazardous contamination.

The government, alongside experts from the Ministry of Environment, Health, Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), and National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), will conduct comprehensive health audits to test lead levels in humans, soil, air, and water sources. Results will be made public for review.
