Ogun State First to Adopt National Building Code Legislation

Ogun State has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first state in Nigeria to adopt the National Building Code (NBC) through legislative action. This development was announced during a program held at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on October 25, 2023.

The NBC, which aims to establish minimum standards in the construction sector, has faced challenges since its inception in 1987 and subsequent approval by the Federal Executive Council in 2006. The Ogun State Government, led by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, has taken proactive steps to implement the NBC, with Tunji Odunlami, the Permanent Secretary, playing a key role in this process.

The adoption is seen as a response to the high incidence of building collapses in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos State. The Ogun State Government plans to unveil the Ogun State Building Construction Code 2025, which will further regulate development in the state.

The legislative act is expected to be officially gazetted by May 4, 2026.
