Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the governor, announced that Thursday, August 20, 2026, would be observed as a public holiday by Ogun State Government in recognition of Isese Day. According to his statement, this designation demonstrates the current administration's resolve to protect and advance the heritage and cultural traditions of Yoruba communities.
Followers of the Yoruba traditional religion use Isese Day each year to revere their forebears and take part in time-honored spiritual observances. Prayers, cultural performances, and varied forms of worship that celebrate the ancestral and religious legacy of the Yoruba comprise the observance.
By setting this day apart, practitioners gain a formal space to reaffirm their bond with their faith community. The year 2023 marked when Ogun State's House of Assembly enacted a resolution that Governor Dapo Abiodun subsequently ratified, thereby codifying August 20 as a public holiday.
This placed Ogun alongside other Nigerian jurisdictions recognizing the occasion—regions where indigenous African religious adherents mark the date with comparable reverence. With public holiday status, Ogun State schools, government agencies, and commercial establishments will cease their usual activities on the scheduled date.
Residents who practice Isese traditions thereby gain the freedom to engage in ceremonial and cultural participation without impediments from school schedules or work requirements.
