Ogun State Tests 500 Residents for Lead Poisoning Risk

The Ogun State government has initiated a comprehensive health audit in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, testing 500 residents for lead poisoning due to concerns of possible lead exposure. This action follows the closure of seven lead-acid battery recycling factories in the area last November, which were implicated in potential lead contamination.

The health audit, led by Dr. Tomi Coker, aims to restore public confidence and safeguard health.

Blood samples from the selected residents will determine blood lead levels, with a focus on vulnerable groups, including pregnant women and children. Governor Dapo Abiodun has directed the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research to conduct an independent study to ensure transparency and credibility.

Traditional ruler Oba Kazeem Gbadamosi expressed appreciation for the government's intervention and assured community cooperation. The audit process includes environmental assessments and compliance reviews to address health risks posed by identified companies.
