WHO Launches Health Study on Hydrocarbon Exposure in Ogoniland

The World Health Organization (WHO) has initiated a comprehensive health study in Ogoniland, River State, to investigate the prevalence of ailments associated with long-term exposure to hydrocarbons. This initiative aligns with recommendations from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and aims to complement ongoing environmental remediation efforts in the area.

The study, coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), will involve approximately 4,000 participants from both impacted and non-impacted communities. The research is expected to last nearly three years, beginning mid-2025, and will include assessments of individuals engaged in specific activities such as farming, fishing, and sand mining.

Prof. Nenibarini Zabbei, the project coordinator, emphasized the importance of community engagement and obtaining voluntary consent for participation.

Traditional rulers, including HRM Samuel Nnee and HRM Festu Paago Bagia Gberesaakoo XIII, have expressed support for the study, highlighting the need for adequate security and collaboration to ensure its success.
