Ohanaeze Ndigbo Demands Nnamdi Kanu's Release

On Thursday, during a general assembly at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo secretariat in Enugu State, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). John Azuta Mbata, the President General of Ohanaeze, stated that Kanu's continued imprisonment symbolizes collective incarceration for the entire Igbo people.

Kanu is currently held at the Sokoto Correctional Centre following a conviction for treason. Azuta Mbata warned the federal government against misleading the Igbo community regarding Kanu's situation and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider Kanu's release as a minimum demand.

He also highlighted the importance of preserving Igbo language and culture, referencing a UNESCO report that lists the Igbo language as at risk of extinction. Ohanaeze plans to promote the language through scholarships and online learning platforms for children in the diaspora.
