Ohanaeze Ndigbo Urges Amnesty for Nnamdi Kanu

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has urged President Bola Tinubu to grant amnesty to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This call was made in a press statement issued on June 12, 2026, as part of efforts to promote national reconciliation and strengthen unity across Nigeria.

The organization's deputy president general, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, emphasized that Kanu's release should coincide with Nigeria's democratic ideals, signaling a commitment to justice and healing longstanding grievances in the Southeast. Ohanaeze clarified that Kanu's advocacy is often misunderstood and aligns with the vision of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu regarding Biafra.

The organization dismissed fears that Kanu's release would destabilize the country, arguing instead that it would enhance Tinubu's leadership and demonstrate a commitment to reconciliation. They expressed confidence that Kanu's release would foster dialogue and contribute positively to national discourse.
