Jessica Oji Wins Nigeria's First Shot Put World Title

Jessica Oji has become the first Nigerian to win a world title in a field event at any level by securing gold in the women’s shot put at the 2026 World Athletics Under-20 Championships held in Oregon. The teenager achieved a championship-winning throw of 18.08 metres, marking a significant milestone for Nigerian athletics.

Oji took an early lead with a throw of 18.05 metres in the opening round and improved her distance to 18.08 metres on her second attempt, which remained unbeaten throughout the competition. She further demonstrated her dominance with a final attempt of 18.07 metres.

Ecuador’s Belsy Jennifer Quinonez won silver with a best throw of 17.90 metres, while Germany’s Emily Scherf earned bronze. Oji had previously shown her potential during qualification with a throw of 17.56 metres, finishing first overall.

This victory follows her silver medal performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she competed against senior athletes, and signifies a breakthrough for Nigeria in a discipline where the country has historically excelled in track and jumps.
