Okechukwu Defends Zoning, Critiques Atiku's Claims

Osita Okechukwu, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), responded to Atiku Abubakar's recent public statement regarding zoning in Nigeria. Okechukwu argued that zoning arrangements enhance national cohesion, equity, and justice, countering Abubakar's claim that zoning leads to self-defeat.

He described Abubakar's remarks as a "classic case of self-denial" and criticized the notion that zoning is detrimental. Okechukwu highlighted the historical distribution of presidential power in Nigeria, noting that the southern region has held the presidency for approximately 18 years during the Fourth Republic, compared to 10 years for the northern region.

He expressed concern that such statements could heighten political tension between the northern and southern parts of Nigeria and emphasized the importance of recognizing historical realities in discussions about political arrangements.
