Nigeria Launches Climate Governance Ranking for States

Prof. Chukwumerij Okereke, founder of Societi Planet Prosper, announced the initiation of a Climate Governance Ranking for Nigeria's 36 states during an event in Abuja.

This initiative aims to deepen awareness of climate change actions at the grassroots level and emphasizes the importance of state-level action in addressing climate vulnerabilities. The first results of this ranking were released in 2023, following a two-year period since the project's inception.

Okereke highlighted that the ranking is not merely a grading system but a tool to galvanize increased climate action among states. The initiative collaborates with the Federal Ministry of Environment and aims to create a framework for states to assess their climate governance.

Dr. Nura Ibrahim Kazaur, chairman of the Commission on Climate Change, expressed expectations for tailored training programs and a trust-based network to support the implementation of climate action measures.
