Arthur Okonkwo Set for Super Eagles Debut at Unity Cup

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo will make his debut for the Super Eagles at the forthcoming Unity Cup tournament scheduled for next month. Okonkwo, who recently finalized his switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria, has represented England at various youth levels, including U16, U17, and U18.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper received FIFA approval on Monday to compete for Nigeria at the senior level. NFF officials indicated that Okonkwo's enthusiasm for the switch facilitated the process, with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chell eager to include him in the squad.

Okonkwo's performance this season, where he made 42 appearances and achieved 10 clean sheets in 37 Championship matches, has strengthened his case for national team selection. The Super Eagles are set to commence their Unity Cup campaign against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Charlton Athletic's home ground.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Petersid Idah advised Okonkwo to adapt to the unique demands of African football to secure a starting role.
