Prof. Olaopa Advocates Local Government Reforms in Nigeria

During the ninth yearly lecture at the Binuyo Foundation titled "Strengthen Local Government Framework: Nigeria's Nation Transform," Prof. Tunji Olaopa, Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, outlined several reforms aimed at optimizing Nigeria's local government system for the benefit of citizens.

He stressed that the fundamental starting point for these reforms should be a constitutional re-evaluation of the relationship between state and local governments. Olaopa highlighted the importance of traditional community structures and collaboration to boost local government services and social capital.

He referenced the World Bank's Local Fiscal Transparency and Accountability (LFTA) protocol as a framework for enhancing local government performance. Olaopa also addressed the capacity deficits within local governments that limit their ability to deliver services effectively.

He acknowledged the influence of his mentors, including the late Professor Ojetunji Aboyad and Professor Akin Mabogunje, in shaping his ideas on community-based development models.
