Local Governance is Key to Democracy, Says Prof. Olaopa

During a lecture at the Binuyo Foundation in Oyo, Prof. Tunji Olaopa, Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, declared that viable local governance is the bedrock of democracy in Nigeria.

He highlighted the need to strengthen the local government framework to transform the nation and emphasized that local governance is essential for grassroots development. Olaopa criticized past administrations for failing to align development strategies with local government needs, resulting in ineffective governance.

He pointed out that the 1999 constitution has eroded local government autonomy by empowering state governments over local councils. He called for a restructuring of Nigeria's federal system to ensure that local governments can effectively serve their communities and act as a legitimate platform for democratic participation.

Olaopa concluded that a robust local government system is crucial for the future of democracy in Nigeria.
