Olawepo-Hashim Demands INEC Disbandment After Court Ruling

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate and chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has called for the disbandment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in response to a recent Court of Appeal judgment regarding the Electoral Act. He stated that the appellate court's decision revealed fundamental flaws in the administration of elections and raised serious concerns about the credibility of INEC.

Olawepo-Hashim argued that the judgment rendered key provisions of the Electoral Act ineffective, necessitating far-reaching reforms to restore public confidence in Nigeria's electoral process. He emphasized that the current structure of INEC is untenable and should be replaced with a more transparent and accountable institution capable of conducting credible elections.

He insisted that electoral reforms must address systemic weaknesses within the electoral management body, asserting that democracy can only thrive when elections reflect the genuine will of the people. Olawepo-Hashim urged relevant authorities to analyze the implications of the judgment and take urgent steps to strengthen Nigeria's democratic institutions.
