Ondo AG Warns Monarchs Against Detention Practices

On Wednesday, during a three-day workshop in Akure organized by the Ondo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Olukayode Ajulo cautioned traditional rulers against converting their palaces into courts or detention centres. Ajulo stressed that traditional rulers must operate within the confines of the Constitution and the law, distinguishing their customary authority from the powers reserved for courts and law enforcement agencies.

He clarified that the Constitution does not recognize traditional rulers as a “fourth arm of government” but acknowledges their role in local governance and community development. Ajulo urged traditional rulers to act as custodians of culture and peace-builders, warning them against detaining individuals for alleged crimes, which should be handled by authorized law enforcement.

He also encouraged the use of mediation and customary arbitration while advising against self-help in disputes, particularly regarding land issues, and called for cooperation with statutory authorities for community safety.
