Fatal Truck Collision on Cross River Highway Claims One

A tragic road accident occurred early Monday on the Calabar-Itu Federal Highway in Cross River, resulting in the death of one truck driver and injuries to others. The collision involved two articulated vehicles: one transporting stones and the other carrying palm oil.

Eyewitness Samuel Otu noted that neither truck appeared to be speeding before the crash, which was attributed to the poor condition of the highway, including deep gullies and uneven surfaces. The impact crushed the front of the palm oil truck, killing its driver instantly.

The accident caused significant damage and temporarily obstructed traffic, leading to a gridlock along the corridor linking Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. Eyewitness Odudu David expressed concern over the state of the road and called for government efforts to expedite the highway rehabilitation project to prevent further accidents.

Federal Road Safety Corps official Innoc Tommi Etuk confirmed the incident and stated that victims were evacuated and wreckage cleared to restore normal traffic flow.
