One Year of Illegal Incarceration of Okuama Leaders

Leaders of the Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State have been illegally detained by the military for a year without trial. The arrest was made in connection to the killing of 17 officers during a controversial peace mission in March 2024.

The detainees, including Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, and James Oghoroko (who has since died in custody), have allegedly been denied access to medical care, legal representation, and family visits. The community has expressed concern over the treatment of the detainees, with Oghoroko's death raising further alarms.

The continued incarceration without trial is seen as a violation of human rights and a disregard for the Nigerian Constitution. Calls have been made for the release of the detainees and for a fair trial to be conducted in accordance with legal principles.
