Northern Governors Push for State Police to Tackle Insecurity

During a meeting in Abuja, the Northern Governors Forum, chaired by Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya, reiterated the necessity of establishing state police to effectively tackle Nigeria's security challenges. Yahaya highlighted that the complex security situation in the country requires localized, intelligence-driven responses.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to advancing critical reforms, particularly the creation of a constitutional framework for state police. The governors collectively agreed on the importance of sustained efforts to neutralize emerging threats and ensure peace across Northern Nigeria.

They also discussed the establishment of a Northern State Security Trust Fund, with a commitment of N1 billion monthly from participating states. Yahaya noted that states like Nasarawa, Borno, Kebbi, and Kaduna have begun fulfilling their financial commitments.

The governors emphasized the need for proactive measures to address recurring farmer-herder conflicts, which pose significant threats to agricultural productivity and peace in the region.
