Onwuzurike Wins Silver, Ends Nigeria's 32-Year Medal Drought

Udodi Onwuzurike, a 23-year-old sprinter, made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win a Commonwealth Games 200m medal, securing a silver with a Season’s Best time of 20.09 seconds at the Glasgow 2026 Games, which concluded on Sunday. Competing from the challenging Lane 8, Onwuzurike moved from fifth place to claim the silver medal, finishing behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who won gold with a time of 19.96 seconds, and Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor, who took bronze with 20.11 seconds.

Onwuzurike had previously recorded a Season’s Best of 20.18 seconds at the Gyulai István Memorial in Budapest, Hungary. After the race, he stated that he is not yet where he wants to be and plans to return to Florida, USA, to rest before preparing for the World Championship.

He acknowledged the challenges he faced due to a recent injury but expressed satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing the importance of focus and concentration during the race.
