OPay Engages DSS and Police Over Shutdown Rumor

OPay has escalated its response to a viral social media message falsely claiming that the fintech company would cease its Nigerian operations. The company’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, announced on Wednesday during a live-streamed press conference that they have enlisted the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to investigate the origins and spread of the rumor.

Rokosu emphasized that OPay intends to pursue legal consequences against those responsible for the harmful information. He warned that anyone spreading similar claims in the future should expect decisive legal action.

OPay's Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, countered the rumor by affirming the company's ongoing operations, stating, "OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere." The false notice, which began circulating on Sunday, advised customers to withdraw their funds before September 1, 2026, to avoid losing access to their accounts. OPay has urged customers to rely on official channels for verified information.
