King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja Crowned in Opobo

The coronation of His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, as the sixth Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom occurred on September 26, 2026, marking a significant cultural event for the Niger Delta. This event reflects the enduring identity and heritage of Opobo Kingdom.

Hon. Awaji-Inombek Dagomie Abiante, the federal lawmaker for Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency, has been instrumental in advocating for the preservation of Opobo’s history, particularly through his lobbying for the King Jaja of Opobo Historical and Cultural Centre. This initiative, which took about seven years of advocacy, was inaugurated by the Federal Government in August 2024.

Abiante emphasized that the center aims to deepen research into King Jaja's history, promote Opobo's heritage, and create opportunities in tourism and employment. The recent coronation serves as a timely reminder of the cultural advocacy surrounding the Opobo monarchy and the importance of institutional recognition of its history.
