Nigerian Opposition Parties Reject Senate's Proposal to Limit Political Parties, Citing Threat to Democracy

Opposition parties in Nigeria, led by figures like Muntari Danduts, Peter Ameh, and Chekwa Okori, strongly oppose the Senate's move to restrict the number of political parties to 10. The proposal, presented by Senator Danduts, has sparked outrage among opposition leaders who view it as a direct attack on Nigeria's democracy.

Chief Ameh of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) condemned the suggestion, emphasizing the importance of a multi-party democracy in a diverse nation like Nigeria. Chekwa Okori, the national chairman of the Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), rejected the proposal, asserting that limiting party numbers would deny Nigerians their political rights.

The proposal is part of ongoing legislative discussions on the 2025 Electoral Bill, aiming to introduce several changes to Nigeria's electoral laws.
