Makinde Calls for UN Probe into Oriire Abduction Incident

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde stated that his request for the United Nations to investigate the May 15 abduction of school children and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area (LGA) is not intended to diminish the efforts of local security agencies. On July 10, 44 teachers and children were released after 56 days in captivity, following pressure from security operatives, including the army, police, and the Department of State Security.

Tragically, two teachers and some security personnel lost their lives during the incident. At the inauguration of an 8-man Judicial Commission of Inquiry in Ibadan, Makinde emphasized the need for accountability and reform to restore public confidence and prevent future occurrences.

He tasked the commission with establishing facts, identifying lapses, and recommending measures to enhance the protection of schools. The commission, led by retired Justice Mojeed Owoade, has four weeks to complete its assignment, with a commitment to transparency and diligence.
