Oshiomhole Demands Akpabio's Resignation Over Senate Rules

On Thursday, Adam Oshiomhole, representing Edo North in the Nigerian Senate, demanded the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio due to recent amendments to the Senate standing orders. Oshiomhole described the amendments as a root cause of a moral crisis, arguing that they fundamentally alter the eligibility criteria for leadership positions in the Senate.

He emphasized that the new framework for debate fails to meet moral and procedural thresholds. The amendments, passed on Tuesday, require candidates for top leadership positions to have served at least two consecutive, unbroken terms.

This change has led to deep divisions within the Senate, with critics claiming it is designed to narrow the field ahead of the 2027 political cycle. Oshiomhole referenced former Senate President David Mark, warning against altering rules for political convenience.

Following these tensions, the Senate, led by Opeyemi Bamidele, formally rescinded portions of the amended order, citing potential constitutional inconsistencies.
