Oshiomhole Claims Akpabio Unqualified for Senate President

During a plenary session, Adams Oshiomhole argued that Godswill Akpabio does not meet the new requirement of serving at least eight uninterrupted years in the Senate to qualify for the position of Senate President. Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State, emphasized that Akpabio has not completed the required term despite amendments allowing lawmakers to serve two consecutive terms to contest for the presidency of the Senate.

He raised concerns about the moral implications of changing the rules, suggesting that such amendments are attempts to manipulate the leadership landscape of the Senate. Oshiomhole referenced David Mark's tenure as Senate President, asserting that the rules should not be altered to favor any individual.

The session saw tensions rise as Oshiomhole attempted to raise points of order, which were met with resistance from Akpabio, who warned Oshiomhole against unruly behavior. The Senate adopted amendments stipulating that nominations for the presidency must follow a strict ranking order.
