Senate Reverses Controversial Amendment Amid Tensions

On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate rescinded a controversial amendment to its standing orders from 2026, which had raised concerns about inconsistencies with the 1999 Constitution. Senator Adam Oshiomhole of Edo North criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio, demanding his resignation over the amendment.

The debate highlighted tensions as several governors, including Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, are positioning themselves for leadership roles in the Senate ahead of the 2027 elections. Senator Opeyemi Bamidele explained that the amendment introduced provisions that conflicted with constitutional sections, necessitating the reversal to maintain legislative integrity.

The motion to rescind was seconded by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, with Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau emphasizing the need for alignment with constitutional provisions. Oshiomhole described the amendment process as flawed and indicative of a moral crisis within the Senate, questioning the ethical standards of leadership eligibility.
