Osinbajo Advocates Judicial Reforms for Public Trust

Yemi Osinbajo, the former Vice President of Nigeria, urged for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria's judiciary to enhance public confidence in the justice system. Speaking during a fireside chat at the 2026 annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, held at the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, he highlighted that justice is often perceived as unfair and stressed the importance of a credible justice system for a stronger nation.

Osinbajo expressed concern over the integrity issues within the judiciary, referencing past surveys indicating that a significant number of legal practitioners view judges as corrupt. He called for the restructuring of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to establish an independent investigative arm, noting that the current structure is insufficient for effective discipline.

Additionally, he pointed out the need to improve the welfare of judicial officers and emphasized the importance of financial autonomy for the judiciary, advocating for cooperation between the executive and legislative branches to uphold judicial independence.
