Police Commissioner Removed Ahead of Osun Election

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, stated that the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Gotan, was removed from his position due to complaints from politicians in the lead-up to the governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. Disu made this announcement during a press briefing, explaining that the decision followed consultations with political stakeholders who expressed a lack of confidence in Gotan.

To address these concerns, the police introduced the role of an electoral commissioner of police, who will oversee election security. Disu confirmed that the new officer would take charge of operations ahead of the election.

Additionally, other senior police officers, including the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in charge of elections and a Deputy Commissioner of Police, will be deployed to ensure adequate security during the poll. Disu assured that the police would collaborate with other security agencies to maintain order and prevent violence, emphasizing their responsibility for internal security during the election.
