Osun State Appoints New Police Commissioner Amid Criticism

The Nigeria Police Force has redeployed Ibrahim Gotan from his position as Osun State's Commissioner of Police and appointed Ibrahim Zungura to replace him. This decision comes shortly after the Osun governorship election held on August 15, 2023, during which Gotan faced significant criticism from political actors and civil society groups for alleged partisanship in handling politically sensitive matters.

The announcement was confirmed by Osun State Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi, who indicated that further details would be provided in a press release. Zungura was promoted to Commissioner of Police in July and was previously in charge of Training and Courses at the Police Academy in Kano.

His appointment occurs amid ongoing security concerns in Osun State related to the election, including disputes over local government control and allegations of political violence. Gotan's tenure had been marked by accusations of unacceptable partisan conduct, particularly from Governor Ademola Adeleke's administration and civil society groups.
