INEC Chair Promises Free, Fair Osun Governorship Election

On Friday, during a courtesy visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), assured the residents of Osun State that the winner of the upcoming governorship election on August 15 will be determined through a peaceful ballot rather than violence. Amupitan described the election as a critical test ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing the importance of the people's will through their votes.

He acknowledged the current political tension in the state but stated that INEC is working closely with security agencies, including the police and military, to ensure a peaceful electoral exercise. Amupitan referred to the Osun governorship election as a "mirror to the 2027 general election" and stressed the need for a credible and peaceful poll.

In response, Oba Oyetunji urged INEC to maintain the integrity of the electoral process, calling for a fair, free, and credible election.
