INEC Assures Readiness for Osun Governorship Election

On Wednesday, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), assured stakeholders of the commission's readiness to conduct a credible governorship election in Osun State scheduled for August 15, 2026. Speaking at the Osun State Governorship Election Stakeholders’ Forum in Osogbo, he emphasized that INEC is logistically, technically, and operationally prepared to meet the standards set by the Electoral Act 2026.

Amupitan revealed that the certified register for the election includes 2,339,233 registered voters across 30 local government areas, with 14 political parties participating. He announced an extension for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) until July 31, after a significant number of newly registered voters collected their cards.

The commission has implemented measures to ensure security around PVC collection centers and has established 97 Super Registration Area Centres and 105 Registration Area Centres. Additionally, 4,427 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices will be used, with biometric verification as the sole method of accreditation.
