INEC and Ataoja Call for Peaceful Osun Governorship Election

On Friday, during a courtesy visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urged for a peaceful, free, and credible governorship election in Osun State scheduled for August 15. He stressed that no life should be lost for political power, stating, “The blood of any Osun citizen is not worth shedding just for the purpose of electing a governor.” Amupitan revealed that INEC had coordinated with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to ensure adequate security during the election.

He warned against misinformation that could deter voter participation and emphasized that the election's outcome should reflect the people's will, not violence. The Ataoja echoed this sentiment, urging INEC to conduct a fair election.

A mock accreditation exercise will be held in selected local government areas to test INEC’s technology ahead of the polls, which are significant as they precede the 2027 general elections.
