Osun State Appoints Tajudeen Olanrewaju as Akire of Ikire

The Osun State Government has officially appointed Tajudeen Olanrewaju as the new Akire of Ikire, located in the Irewol Local Government Council area. This appointment follows the passing of the previous monarch, Oba Olatund Falabi.

The decision was reached during a State Executive Council meeting held in Osogbo on February 27, 2026, presided over by Governor Ademola Adeleke. A statement issued by the government, through Commissioner Kolapo Alimi, informed the public about the approval, which was based on a memo submitted by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The approval adheres to existing laws regarding the settlement of the Akire stool, which has been subject to disputes since a Supreme Court judgment in 2021. This judgment affirmed that the ruling house producing the late monarch had no legal right to occupy the stool after a vacancy arose in 1987.

The state government has collaborated with the ruling houses to amend the 1958 Akire chieftaincy declaration, ensuring a smooth succession process for future vacancies.
