INEC Prepares for Osun Governorship Election Amid Warnings

On Thursday, August 1, 2023, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), announced the commission's full preparedness for the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15.

During the signing of the Osun Governorship Election Peace Accord in Osogbo, he emphasized that violence, voter intimidation, and vote buying would not be tolerated. INEC has completed seven of the nine activities in its election timetable, with only the end of campaigns on August 13 remaining.

A total of 2,339,233 eligible voters are expected to participate across 3,763 polling units. Amupitan expressed concern over recent political violence and outlined intelligence-driven security measures in collaboration with security agencies.

He assured that stolen Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) would be blacklisted and replaced, and that voting would utilize biometric verification through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). Results will be uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) immediately after voting.

Security agencies will monitor polling units to prevent vote buying.
