Osun Man Sentenced to Death for Murder of Elderly Woman

On October 11, 2023, Taiwo Agboola, a 30-year-old man, was sentenced to death by hanging by the Osun State High Court for the murder of 62-year-old Jadesola Olubayo. Agboola was first arraigned on November 7, 2024, facing three charges: attempt to rape, indecent assault, and murder, contrary to sections 359, 360, and 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Laws of Osun State 2002.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Ajibola Alad and Omotayo Babalola, presented four witnesses, including Latifat Adeyemo, the granddaughter of the deceased. Adeyemo testified that Agboola attacked her grandmother at the palm oil processing site in Olokemeji Village, Ifetedo, causing panic among the women present.

After overpowering Olubayo, Agboola killed her by smashing her face with a stone and stick. He attempted to escape but was later apprehended by the police.

Justice Adedapo Adeniji found Agboola guilty of all charges and sentenced him to 14 years for attempted rape, two years for indecent assault, and death for murder.
