Osun Monarch Warns Politicians Against Election Violence

Oba Adesuyi Haastrup, the traditional ruler of Ijesaland, issued a stern warning to politicians regarding the rising incidence of politically motivated killings in the region. During the induction ceremony at the maiden Obokungbusi Hall of Fame, he expressed alarm over the deaths of at least three Ijesa men within a month, allegedly connected to the upcoming August elections.

The monarch questioned the rationale behind the violence, stating that it threatens to turn Nigeria back to a barbaric state reminiscent of the 1960s. He warned that politicians found culpable in the killings would face severe consequences, including possible banishment from the land.

Oba Haastrup called on religious leaders from churches and mosques to intensify advocacy against political violence. This warning comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in Ijesaland, particularly in Ilesa, where recent violent clashes led to arrests of five suspects linked to cult activities.
