El-Rufai Addresses Nigeria's Economic Challenges in Court

Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, raised concerns about Nigeria's economic issues during a court appearance on Wednesday. He argued that the country's primary problem lies in the misallocation of its human resources rather than a lack of capable individuals.

El-Rufai noted that highly skilled Nigerians often gravitate towards sectors that offer immediate financial returns, which detracts from productive sectors essential for long-term growth. He highlighted that Nigeria's GDP growth is projected at 4.1% for 2024, yet the GDP per capita remains low at approximately $1,084.

El-Rufai warned that the current economic structure promotes rent-seeking behavior instead of genuine productivity, which could weaken the foundation necessary for sustainable growth. He proposed reforms to redirect the economy, including reducing discretionary government power and enhancing property rights.

El-Rufai's statements reflect a broader concern about the structural challenges affecting business growth in Nigeria.
